Long-time JASS associate, ally and advisor, John Gaventa is the Director of the Coady International Institute at the St. Francis Xavier University. Previously, John headed up the Participation, Power and Social Change team at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex. His cutting-edge work in all aspects of citizen democracy bridges theory and practice, and JASS continues to benefit from this most accessible of scholar activists.

A former Rhodes Scholar and MacArthur Prize Fellow, John holds a PhD in Politics from Oxford and B.A. from Vanderbilt University in Politics, Sociology and Philosophy, Magna cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa. As an academic, his research has illuminated and influenced aspects of international development, citizen participation, participatory methodologies, social movements, and grassroots organization. He has organized and led several large-scale international research programs and action learning networks, including one on citizenship, participation and accountability. John has led a number of civil society organizations, including the Highlander Center in the US, and Oxfam UK.
