JASS is a feminist movement support organization anchored in the Global South

We are dedicated to strengthening and amplifying the voice, visibility, and collective power of women for a just and sustainable world.

Just Power

Power has always been explicitly at the heart of JASS’ feminist organizer schools and movement-building efforts. Learn more about why JASS is Just Power!

What fuels and directs JASS’ feminist movement building work? It’s BIG IDEAS such as Power, Feminism, Intersectionality, and Feminist Popular Education that shape how we see the world. It’s these concepts that animate all we do to transform it.

JASS began in 2002 as ‘just’ associates – a community of practice of activists, popular educators, and scholars from 20 countries who provided training and strategic advice to many international organizations and cross-subsidized work with social movements and activist researchers. This original network anchored and co-led the evolution of JASS, both institutionally and programmatically. Today, JASS operates in 22 countries across Mesoamerica, Southeast Asia, and Southern Africa. We have trained more than 3,000 activists, built eight national or regional networks, and established hubs in nine countries.

JASS is guided by the vision of a just, equitable, and sustainable world that centers the care of people and the planet. The social transformation we seek requires deep shifts in the structures and dynamics of power so that all people can live together with freedom and dignity. We work towards a world that protects the rights of all people, regardless of who they are, where they live, or what they believe. We believe in deep democracy in both the personal and public spheres where all people respect their differences, find common ground, and participate without fear in the decisions that affect their lives.

JASS’ work is shaped by an analysis of power and how its abuses drive inequality, violence, exploitation, and exclusion in women’s lives across relationships, institutions and belief systems. JASS believes that the most meaningful and lasting change in women’s lives and communities comes when women themselves have the individual and collective power to define and lead that change. To this end, JASS equips and accompanies community based women activists, organizations and networks to build the development of their strategic and organized capacity.

We offer political education, build bridges, facilitate alliances, and support strategic leadership in each region where JASS works, and globally. Our staff and advisors do not just lead programs and offer trainings; they are part of the very movements and agendas we support and accompany. They contribute their facilitation skills and expertise to support other activists, build collective power for women, and overcome inequality, violence, and injustice.

Allies and Supporters

Organizing brings women, their allies and organizations together to identify injustices and act collectively to solve them while envisioning a better future. As a movement builder, JASS works closely with dozens of partner organizations to build powerful networks that can win large- scale change.
