Honduran Women Mobilize Against Contraception Ban

Just days before the Honduran congress is set to approve a law that would imprison women for using the morning-after pill, even after being raped, women in Honduras have mobilized hundreds of thousands of supporters around the world to sign on to a petition calling on the President of Congress to stand up for womenā€™s rights and reject the law. In February, the Honduran Supreme Court upheld a 2009 ban on emergency contraception pills (ECP), after a campaign by conservative religious groups that equated ECP with abortion. Many JASS allies and staff joined the feminist movement in Honduras in organizing a demonstration in front of the congress in early 2012 and are leading new actions in May.

Report Highlights Violence against Women Activists in Mexico

ā€œApproximately 75% of women human rights defenders in Mexico are victims of gender violence," says a newly released report put out by Consorcio Oaxaca, la Red Mesa de Mujeres Cuidad JuĆ”rez and JASS. The investigative report highlights the violence ā€“ including threats, murders and rape - faced by Mexican women activists in exercising their work and is based on research conducted for the Regional Baseline Report on Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD) in Mesoamerica. The first of its kind in the country, the reportā€™s findings were released during a press conference on January 19th in Mexico City. This analysis highlights the violence ā€“ including threats, murders and rape ā€“ Mexican activists experience.
