Crack Down on LGBTI in Africa

In a week that saw Ugandaā€™s Minister for Ethics and Integrity order theĀ break upĀ of a workshop for young LGBT activists; ten women suspected of lesbianism arrested inĀ Cameroon; and, the proposal of ā€œstrengthened” anti-gay laws inĀ LiberiaĀ – LGBTI communities across the African continent are increasingly at risk for harassment, violence and even death. ā€œThe thing is that to be gay in Uganda, you can die,” saysĀ JASS Southern Africaā€™sĀ Hope Chigudu, who was participating in the workshop in Entebbe. ā€œI wonder if people are willing to take these risks.” But even in the face of intense homophobia sweeping across the continent, LGBT activists areĀ speaking upĀ and building strategies for their safety and security.
