Safe spaces serve as political spaces for building common ground among diverse activists. The LGBTQ+ community is a group facing worsening discrimination, threats, and violence in Indonesia. To build solidarity and collectively strategize about the risks and violence they face, they need safe spaces to break silences, feel connected, analyze power dynamics, and find common ground. Over the years, through the safe spaces facilitated by JASS, the young women’s alliance FAMM Indonesia, and the We Lead Consortium, Indonesian LBTQ+ organization GAMACCA learns about the importance of creating safe spaces and cross-movement networks.
