If Sexuality were a human being and she made a grand entrance (l’entrée grande) into the African Union conference centre, the honourable delegates would stand up and bow in honour. But the acknowledgement of and respect for Sexuality would no doubt be tinged with overtones of parody and irony, even sadness, because although Sexuality might represent notions of pleasure and the continuity of humanity itself, the term conjures up discussions about sources of oppression and violence.

“We have waited long enough.” So begins an important letter to the new President of the Philippines signed by 22 partner organizations and several prominent women’s rights activists as part of an organizing effort facilitated by JASS Philippines with the Center for Women’s Resources and the Women’s Legal Bureau. In 2010, many of us across the JASS community are thinking about how to define and promote economic democracy as a critical element of our gender justice efforts, and any equality effort for that matter. So I was very excited to read the"6 foundational ideas for a progressive economic agenda" by Deepak Bhargava, an influential, inspiring social justice leader/thinker in the US who heads a large organization - Center for Community Change -- dedicated to grassroots organizing, a bit like JASS, but focused on the USA. While definitely a US perspective, it's recommended reading.

We’re in Detroit where more than 8000 grassroots and union organizers and activists of all stripes are debating, performing, strategizing. It’s an awesome multigenerational, multiracial, multi-everything mix with great vibes, smart politics and incredible T-shirts. Bringing life to Detroit for sure – called the ground zero of the failures of capitalism – USSF attendees seem to multiply the city’s population, a resilient town limping along with 30% unemployment and staggering poverty.

This needs assessment is part of the JASS-Southern Africa Movement Building Initiative (MBI). The initiative is implemented in the African context where the combination of increasing poverty, failed states, corruption and in particular HIV and AIDS have had a particular impact on the lives of women.
Enough! This is the cry of every woman feeling the pain of her 26 sisters now in Morong detention who were reportedly tortured and molested. The voice is getting louder, echoing from all corners of the land.

“We must involve the bosses. We can not move without them. The bosses are our partners. Many of them are just victims of the system too. Most of the employers mean well. All we need to do is raise their awareness and they will be ok. We did a workshop with some of the most senior bosses last year, just one workshop.
