Last April, the EDGE Funders Alliance held its Reorganizing Power for Systems Change conference in Barcelona, providing social movement activists, organizations, and progressive donors an excellent opportunity to discuss strategies for advancing transformative social change through and across our various movement struggles. JASS attended the conference and emerged with a global feminist twist on the framework and accompanying diagram which shaped the dialogue
If there is one thing we can say about this past year, it is that 2017 was the year of women. We were in the streets in dozens of countries – wearing pink hats, no less! We reclaimed our time and we broke the silence.

Conducted by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and carried out by FAMM Indonesia, a women's organization co-created and accompanied by JASS, this research paper delves into the topic of young women's participation in politics and public spaces. Though intensely marginalized and subject to backlash, this study finds that young women may overcome the closing of space through creative community organizing that strengthens self-esteem, builds infromal relationships, and increases leadership capabilities.

From September 8-11, we joined nearly 2000 diverse participants from across the globe in Brazil. From the Black Feminist Forum, plenaries, sessions and hubs, we were incredibly inspired and energized by what we heard, learned and offered. Together with allies, we shared stories and tools for cross-movement power and change.

“I now know how to use a tablet which is not a norm in Malawi because [many believe] tablets cannot and should not be used by a local woman like me,” says woman activist leader Jessie Mwale of Mzimba, Malawi. “But because [of this skill I am empowered and I have knowledge.”  Mobile phones in the hands of women activist leaders can be powerful tools to drive movements and campaigns. Because mobile phones are a personal part of our daily lives, they have the potential to reach and impact thousands more people.
Katswe Sistahood and JASS Southern Africa have joined forces to help young women and girls in Zimbabwe use popular performance art to challenge taboos surrounding sex, sexuality, and women’s bodies, while also organizing for support, protection, and change in a context of corruption and violence against women and girls.
