The Heart-Mind-Body workshop, held at Chengeta Lodge just outside Harare (April 9 – 10), brought together 26 women, each with diverse experiences, perspectives and survival strategies, all united by a common concern: sustaining the work we do in incredibly stressful situations.

Who wins over both feminist activists and the World Bank and Japanese government? The answer is PEKKA, JASS’ Indonesian partner, a network of women headed households. Nani Zulminarni, JASS Southeast Asia Regional Coordinator and founding director of PEKKA, was in Washington, DC with her colleague Petronella Peniloli, PEKKA leader and Village Chief, on January 19th for the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF). Selected after a thorough assessment by Bank experts, PEKKA was chosen as the number one best project funded by the JSDF.

JASS’ Alquimia Leadership School, in partnership with JASS ally, Sinergia N’oj, recently convened 30 indigenous and rural women from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama for a training and strategy workshop on communications for activism. The women immediately put their new skills into action---creating a blog, video, and radio show.

Last week JASS Mesoamerica and Sinergia No'j hosted over two dozen indigenous, rural women from all over Central America and Mexico for a communications training in Guatemala City. The training focused on the right to communication and involved discussions with representatives from women's media projects; site visits to local women-led media outlets, and; hands-on sessions on various topics. These included: developing communications strategy; creating campaigns, and the use of various tools such as blogs, video, press releases, and radio spots.

We’re in Detroit where more than 8000 grassroots and union organizers and activists of all stripes are debating, performing, strategizing. It’s an awesome multigenerational, multiracial, multi-everything mix with great vibes, smart politics and incredible T-shirts. Bringing life to Detroit for sure – called the ground zero of the failures of capitalism – USSF attendees seem to multiply the city’s population, a resilient town limping along with 30% unemployment and staggering poverty.
