Guarantee Justice & Appropriate Reparations for Victims of Genocide During the Ríos Montt Trial

Mesoamerican Women Human Rights Defenders Initiative (IM-Defensoras)

In a statement released by the Mesoamerican WHRD Initiative (IMD), more than 200 women human rights defenders from Mesoamerica recognize and support the historic trial of Efraín Ríos Montt and José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez for their role in the Guatemalan genocide. Thirty years after serious human rights violations were committed during the armed conflict against the Guatemalan people, which severely affected the Mayan population in particular, this trial raises the possibility that the victims of the massacres, extrajudicial executions, forced disappearances, sexual violations and torture, will finally, after decades of waiting, receive justice, truth, and reparations.

The IMD and the signatories demand that measures be taken to ensure that crimes against humanity are never again perpetrated against women and communities; that women and men human rights defenders are guaranteed their right to protection; and that justice, reparations, human rights and democracy are fully realized and guaranteed in Guatemala and throughout Mesoamerica.
