The life and work of Raúl Leis, one of the most important popular educators and human rights activists in Panama and across the region, inspired the creation of the institute, which continues the energy and unconditional giving that Leis gave to CEASPA, the Panamanian Center for Research and Social Action, which he founded and directed, and CEAAL, the General Council of Adult Education in Latin America, where he coordinated the Secretariat from 2005-2011.

Founded in 1977, CEASPA works with and for the poor and excluded communities in Panama and in the region to strengthen social justice and people’s participation in building better society. Mariela is a feminist popular educator, an economist and long-time feminist human rights advocate from Panama. Since 1980, she has been a founder of many women's human rights organizations at the national and Latin American levels.  As a part of the women’s movement from 1992-2004, Mariela designed and coordinated the collective production of the first Equality Plan of Panama, now known as Law 4 of Equal Opportunity, and coordinated the strategies for the Women and Development electoral pacts in the 1994-1999 and 2004 elections.

Looking back at JASS' Movement Building Initiative in Mesoamerica, Southeast Asia, and Southern Africa

JASS’ Alquimia Leadership School, in partnership with JASS ally, Sinergia N’oj, recently convened 30 indigenous and rural women from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama for a training and strategy workshop on communications for activism. The women immediately put their new skills into action---creating a blog, video, and radio show.
