Ellen Gilbert

Ellen Gilbert hails from a small town in Kentucky, where volunteering to build and remodel homes in Appalachia sparked her love for community service. She holds a bachelor's in cultural anthropology from Transylvania University and a master's in international affairs from The New School for Public Engagement. During her graduate studies, she concentrated on gender and development and participated in the 2013 International Field Program in the Balkans. Ellen has presented research on parliamentary gender quotas at The New School, and her master’s thesis focused on women’s resource rights within plural legal systems.

Ellen has lived in Ireland and Albania, where she worked with the Albanian Women's Empowerment Network. She has interned for Habitat for Humanity and the Results for Development Institute. Before joining JASS, Ellen started a professional organizing business helping clients develop organizational habits and skills. Ellen enjoys hiking in Shenandoah, brewing beer, and performing at open mics around town.
