By Grace Divine Ingabire, Power Up! Program Officer, East Africa

From November 24 to 29, 2024, I participated in a training session organized by JASS Southern Africa in Nairobi. This intensive six-day program included five days of discussions on the future of the feminist movement in an increasingly hostile and rapidly changing world,

Over the course of these six days, I gained invaluable insights into the complex relationships between feminism, activism, and power, and how these concepts influence our everyday realities. This experience not only deepened my understanding of these issues but also expanded my perspective on the shared struggles and diverse contexts that shape the lives of activists across the continent.

A common thread of resistance

What struck me the most was the recognition that, while the challenges faced in different African countries may vary in their specifics, they are united by a common thread: a persistent, almost cyclical struggle that feels at times like progress will never come. There is a sense of living in an ongoing state of resistance, where we are caught in an unyielding cycle of attempting to move forward, only to find ourselves repeatedly forced to begin again, as though we are never allowed to fully break free from the status quo. This is compounded by the ever-present uncertainty brought on by the shifting dynamics of global politics, particularly with the rise of new leadership in powerful nations, which adds an additional layer of unpredictability to our activism.

As we discussed the challenges we face, I couldn’t help but think about the metaphor of the “master’s house,” which continues to loom over us. This image, though haunting, also serves as a reminder of the oppressive systems that we are working tirelessly to dismantle. While the weight of this symbol may sometimes feel overwhelming, I firmly believe that, one day, we will succeed in shaking its foundations, if not toppling it entirely.

A collective spirit of determination

There was an undeniable sense of resilience in the room. One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity to meet individuals who have been at the forefront of activism for many years. Their wisdom, compassion, and love were deeply nourishing. It was both humbling and empowering to witness the vulnerability of those around me, as well as the incredible strength with which we all face the future. The collective spirit of determination was palpable, and I found myself deeply moved by the conversations and reflections shared by those present. The sense of unity and the shared commitment to pushing for change, despite the setbacks and hardships, was incredibly inspiring.

Among the most inspiring figures was a female bishop from one of Kenya’s largest churches. Her leadership of one of the country’s most significant feminist and political movements was nothing short of remarkable. Hearing her speak was a profound experience, as it was clear that her dedication and vision had made a lasting impact on countless lives. Being in her presence, along with the other seasoned activists, was incredibly invigorating. It served as a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is ongoing, but it is also a shared journey of solidarity, strength, and collective power. The knowledge that we are not alone in this struggle, and that we are part of a broader global movement for justice, fuels my determination to continue pushing forward, no matter the obstacles.

I am deeply grateful to JASS for providing such a rich and welcoming space for learning and growth. It was truly revitalizing to be surrounded by like-minded individuals in such an inclusive and supportive environment. The experience has not only deepened my understanding of the challenges we face but also reaffirmed my belief in the power of collective action, resilience, and the ongoing fight for a more just and equitable world.
